She stole my heart

26 Jul

This is my latest portrait for my Diary of Faces. It is after Hans Olaf Heyerdahl’s Little Girl on the Beach. Just a crop of her face, although I’d love to try the whole painting some day.  I fell for this charming little thing while I was painting her. Heyerdahl was a Norwegian painter who lived from 1857-1913, but this child looks like she could have been photographed yesterday or at any time between then and now. She is timeless. I had a hard time with this one because acrylics just do not behave like oils, but in the end I am very happy with her.

Below is a photo of the whole spread. On the left page, I have an insert with info on Heyerdahl, the ref image, the colors I used to try to replicate it, ect. Sharing with my friends at Paint Party Friday!

Wow, I can’t visit all the PPF artists but I remembered your name from earlier parties and had to see what you had done. I love this darling little girl. Yes, she could be today’s child. You have caught that special expression on her face. Absolutely wonderful work.

I love her too – what a great job with the hair! And while I haven’t used oils yet, I do know acrylics blend very differently … and one needs to be far quicker!

your painting is really beautiful. you’re right, she has a timelessness about her and she is so winsome looking. great texture and color for her hair.

in answer to your question about the twinkling H2Os… they are water-based and more sheer than acrylics or oils. i have not done much with them yet, but they seem to layer quite nicely. not only do they provide a nice sparkle, but the colors are quite vibrant.

    have a great weekend!

Beautiful portrait! I had a look at Heyerdahl’s work, thanks to your homage, and it’s wonderful. Now I have another artistic hero to worship.

Very nicely done. I agree nothing works like Oils for spreading paint, but its fun to try other mediums. Thanks for your comment on my PPF post.
